Call the salvage yards or junk yards there.

Driving home last night in my 95 Audi 90S, the check engine light came on for about a minute or two before shutting off again for the remainder of the 30 miles home . Everything seemed to be ok, gauges, no misfires or anything abnormal. Car has 161k, five speed, fairly well kept. Any ideas what could have happened or what this means?

there are several ways the check engine light will come on and then go out but if it happened within a few seconds I'd guess your knock sensors detected knock. Cheap gas, dirty fuel injectors, wet electricals could all cause this.

your car has a pair of what are called 2x2 connectors in the fuse box under the hood near the firewall. Audi includes a jumper when the car leaves the factory that you can use to jumper the connector and blink out any fault codes through the check engine light. If you still have yours in the glovebox, go to www.audiworld.com and use the search function to select your model and "blink codes" and you'll get some really easy and nicely detailed instructions for blinking out your codes and a definition for each code. If you don't have the jumper you can easily strip the ends of a short piece of wire and make your own.

I'm betting you just detected knock. Buy a bottle of "Techron" and dump it in the gas tank. It's amazing stuff...

Jack,
The Check Engine Light will come on when a fault is detected in the emission control system. It's not uncommon for the engine to run perfectly normal, even though a fault was detected. There are hundreds of possibilities, so the next thing to do is have the codes read out to see what triggered the fault.

im going to guess that by fairly well maintained means that you havn't had the spark plugs replaced.
SOMETIMES when a check engine light goes on and off every couple hundred miles, its because it COULD need new spark plugs. However, there are many other possibilities as well.

If you have the light on, and your near an AUTOZONE store, have them diagnose it for free. Some other autostores will diagnose it for free as well.

Audi 90 Problems

Engine Problems with air leaks and the fuel injection may cause starting difficulties.
Suspension & Steering Various bushings—located around the subframe, suspension, and steering—deteriorate with age. A clunking noise when driving over bumps, accelerating, or stopping may be a sign of worn bushings.
Drive Train Our technicians recommend having the constant velocity (CV) boots and CV joints inspected at each service. Servicing torn CV boots early can prevent the need to replace the CV half shaft or CV joint.
