BMW 325i Questions and Answers
hi its me again...i got my car checked and it has a hairline crack on its head...mechanicks here in bahrain say they don repair the head instead buy a new engine as another head wont be available according to thm...being new to this country i do no wat to do kindly tell me that can i reapir that small crack on the head and if yes is it ok or no....
regards and happy new year...
ashish
Unfortunately, cracked cylinder heads can be difficult to fix, and they are always expensive. the best thing would be to replace the cylinder head, but if the part isn't available, then that's a problem.
It may be possible to fix the crack and keep the car drivable. I recommend calling some other shops and even parts stores to see if anyone can offer to a less expensive solution than replacing the entire motor.
Sorry you're having such a mountain of trouble!
hi i have just bought a bmw 325i 1993 car i live in bahrain and the summers are quite harsh here. i want to get my cars serviced 1nce for satisfaction. i would like to know after how many kms i should get the car serviced. also what are the things i should consider the most for service. i have noticed some black liquid on the top of engine where there is a cap, what abt that. can i put mineral water instead of coolant if in emergency or no. kindly help me with all that. rest the car is working perfectly fine i just wanna have service tips for bmw as this is my 1st beemer.
thanks and regards
ash.
BMW 325i's are very reliable cars when they are well-cared for. The information I'm looking at says that BMWs made in the early 90s require what BMW calls and "Inspection I" at least every 10,000 Miles, according to factory specifications. This service includes changing the oil and oil filter, and possibly the air filter.
What service you should perform now also depends on what was last performed by the prior owner. The best bet for keeping the car tip-top is to take it to a BMW expert and have them service your car based on what was most recently done and what it appears to need. The oil leak on the engine is definitely a concern.
I wouldn't recommend mineral water--distilled water is best, or at least clean water with low mineral content in an emergency, but maintaining the right coolant mix is very important. BMWs are sensitive, high-performance cars, and investing in maintenance will save big bucks in the long haul.
I need to change the fluid in my imported 1993 BMW from Japan. The transmission sump pan does not have the same shape as those in the service manuals and website! What kind is it so I may find the parts.
Thanks for any help
Try Bavauto, rockauto, autohausaz, BMAauto
Ive read that only certain speakers fit in my car for an upgrade. Is this true? If yes, what kind.
I know that Victor. I dont want to modify anything
Kenwood do ones designed to fit your car exactly with no modifications needed,
Andy
Yes you are correct. There are specific requirements and limits on the speakers you can upgrade based not only on size, but it also depends on the type of system you have already. The OHMS and subwoofers etc. make a difference particularly if you have an HK system in your BMW.
The cheapest way to go is with Bavarian Sound Works at: http://www.bavariansoundwerks.co

The most elite and best sounding way to go is with MB Quart
Front door: 5.25"
Rear door: tweeter
Rear deck: 6.5"
Anything will fit, it depends on how much you want to modify the door panel.
I was teaching my girlfriend to drive my car (manual). She let off the clutch too hard and it jumped forward about 4 times. I tried to restart it but it took 2 tries. Now it starts and runs but sometimes when Im at idle the engine revs up and down between 1 to 3 thousand rpms. Also the engine light, traction control light and brake light are all on. One more thing is that when Im driving and hit the accelerator it feels like its not getting enough fuel and almost sputters ever so slightly. I do not really know about cars, just wondering if anyone has any idea.
Definetly take it to your local autozone. They will scan it for free and tell you everything thats wrong with it. My 2000 328i was idling bad and sort of felt like not enough fuel was getting to the engine. Turned out to be the $450 mass air flow sensor.
I have never heard of a bad clutch causing a rough idle as bad as the one you mention (one to three k rpm). So do not blame your girlfriend or yourself for trying to teach her how to drive a manual trans car. Remember that years ago most cars were manuals.
Just have it diagnosed by a dealer or an independent BMW shop with the right diagnostic tools.
The check engine light may have come about from the knock sensor
being tripped by the jerking start off, the DSC by spinning of the rear wheels, and the brakelights by who knows what (a bad bulb maybe).
Get the car to the dealer, ask them to read the codes and re-set them.
It may work fine after re-setting the codes, if not, the dealer will know what needs to be done based on the codes.
Have fun,
Andy
p.s. get your woman to pay!
It's a scary thing teaching a girlfriend how to drive manual in a Bimmer (I went through a clutch and wore a spot out of my carpet on the passenger side reaching for the brake)!
I would recomend you bring it to someone with a diagnostic tool to read the errors. I witnessed my car getting stalled many times, but no lights came on. Stalling shouldn't be bringing up lights on the dash or causing hard RPMS, unless something went really bad during the ordeal. Definately get is scanned and move from there.

4.New Water pump with metal impeller 3/22/08
These are weak point in these cars and if car require these service because cooling system failuare, that usually means you have blown head gasket. However, if seller is BMW specialist like myself, and replace the above parts just to prevent future problems, the car should be a good buy.
I would least get an engine compression test to verify that the car does not have blown head gasket.
Just get a carfax report and see if the title is good and everything. Then take it to your local mecanic, if the owner doesn't have a problem with it. Other than that, it sounds like a good deal and by the looks of the replacement parts, it sounds like its all good.
Yea man buy it, it's a good deal.
But be ready for high cost of ownership, unless you can do some prevenitive maintenance yourself. I have a 96 and it's been an awesome car, but even oil changes are high at shops. If you can do the work on it yourself they are great cars though. I love mine but if you ever need to take it to a shop it's going to cost you.
i think that is a good deal because i got my BMW 97 328i for 12,000 and i love it. Just its a forign car so if any problems start then u are screwed. its hard to find a mechanic that does forign cars. even if there are a whole bunch of new things on it a problem still could occur.
whatever car you buy have it checked out by a qualified mechanic well worth the money. you will get a more qualified opinion than in this forum
My front headlight went out for my 2002 BMW 325i and im looking for a replacement bulb but im a bit confused. Im not sure which one to get. In the manual it says H7 Bulb, 55 watt. But for HID it's a D2S Bulb?
Here's the website im currently looking at for the Bulbs.

Thank you in advance
Andy is correct.
You have to first start off with, what kind of headlights do you have?
Most 325i came standard with normal Halogen headlights. If you got the upgraded headlights then they will have the Xenon bulbs. The easiest way to tell is if you can see right into your headlights and see your light bulb or if there is a thick piece of glass covering up your view of seeing the bulb? For the xenon bulbs, you must go to the dealership. Now I know they are VERY expensive there, but this way you know you are getting the right stuff. And besides BMW has a 12 month warranty on parts. Xenon normally will last about 3-4x as long as your standard bulbs.
Your BMW would have had Halogen lights as standard which use the H7 bulb.
If Xenon (HID) lights were specified as an optional extra, the DS2 bulb would be needed for the dipped beam.
Contact any BMW dealer with the chassis number, they'll check their computer and let you know which you need,
Andy
Take out the faulty headlight read the numers off of it, and get it from adealer or autoparts store.
I am thinking of buying this car, its a 1994 E36 coupe and has done 200000kms
the only problem i have had with mine was the back suspension strut mountings.
they have a rubber thing at the top that is a weak point. easy to replace though.
great fun to drive!
enjoy.
When driving a german car you are also likely to occasionally start putting your right hand up in the air at a roughly 45 degree angle and shouting something like "heil hitler' and also talking to yourself in a funny accent (unless you're already a kraut). You will also tend to think you can go anywhere in your car as it handle like a Tiger tank!!
Oh wait, sorry that's when you're in a car 9any car) with a german Driver.
No idea what a German car is like to drive as they have the personality on a shoe box!!
BMW 525i is better
Look for dat one
The mileage isn't very good, you could expect all sorts of problems with a car with that many miles.
My parents drive a 2002 BMW 325i, and the headlights are the kind that project a somewhat yellow light. My step-dad keeps saying he likes the Xenon headlights on my car, a 2004 Audi A4, but I'm wondering of there is perhaps a brighter set of lights that is available for the 2002 BMW...? I feel he needs something brighter than what's on my car.
If your step dad has regular halogen bulbs and he wants to put in xenons then he must first buy a conversion kit (roughly $500)
you cannot simply purchase xenon bulbs and put them in your halogen housing
Xenon headlights from BMW will cost several thousand dollars. You should get a quote for conversion to Xenon from a dealer. I would suggest Halogen bulbs from a car parts supplier for under $5 each. Please note that some BMW's have 4 headlights and some have dual filament bulbs in a 2 headlight system. The Sylvania bulbs have worked OK in my 18 year old E-34 for several years.
My left taillight/brake warning light displays intermittently. It has come on and gone off frequently in the past two weeks or so. Sometimes the actual taillights are off (brake light, blinker) and sometimes they are not. Obviously the bulbs are fine because they come back on after having been off. The bulbs have been tightened and all the fuses have been checked. What is wrong? Could it be a short? Any BMW technicians are welcome to answer! Could this be a warning for some other problem?
My 2004 325i did the same thing. The wires were twisted and caused a pin to burn out. The dealer provided all the labor and new bulbs. I just paid for the sockets. Less than $50.
Hi Littlebaker,
Have you checked the electrical connection into the bulb holder itself ? The earth pin (plug side) in the rear lights on your model can sometimes have a high resistance causing the pin and plug to get hot and sporadically fail.
The earth wire/pin is brown in colour.
Remove the plug on the rear of the bulb holder and inspect it. If the earth pin looks burnt in anyway or the hole it is in looks enlarged then this is probably the cause.
If this is the case, usually it would require a new plug and the damaged pins replacing and also a new bulb holder.
I'm not a technician but I had the same problem. The wires going into the harness were being pulled out because all were twisted. Looks to have been done intentionally at the factory. I untwisted a couple times and pushed each individual wire securely into the harness. that was about a year ago and haven't had a problem since. Hope this helps

I owned a 325i for 2 years and loved every minute of it. Not once in two years did I experience even the smallest problem whatsoever with my car. Even more, I loved the fabulous service provided by BMW dealerships and service professional. Oh BMW, how I'll miss you..... |

My dad has a BMW 325i, and I want to steal it. Fun to drive, it's been very reliable, and he hasn't spent much on maintenance and nothing on repair. The brakes are expensive, but they were under warranty. The oil changes are expensive, but you only have to do them once a year or less. |
BMW 325i Problems
| Engine |
|
| Suspension & Steering | Power steering hoses are known to fail occasionally, and it is not uncommon for multiple hoses to be leaking at the same time. |
| Heating & Air Conditioning | The blower final stage fan resistor is known to fail. Symptoms are the heater fan speed varies regardless of the setting, the fan will not turn off when the car is switched off, or the fan will not switch on at all. |
