what is the cause to slow acceleration and how or what do I do to fix it?

Is the engine running rough as in missfiring? Or idles and accelerates smooth but low on power? Thinking cam timing or clogged exhaust, maybe even a stater problem in the torque converter. Do a stall speed check first.
