What is your question?
I’d like to attempt this fix myself. 2012 Buick Verano Two years ago when I bought the vehicle not long after the first month or so on startup I notice a sound like metal on metal it would only last a moment or two and that went on for close to two years. This summer (2023) I notice two small hairline cracks right above the metal timing cover, at the time I was close to thousand miles away. The higher the rpms the more oil would squeeze out of the cracks, all n all oil leaked enough on serpentine belt to break it. It would use roughly a quart every tank of fuel. That’s when the car last ran. Question is What do you think.? Does this car have a timing chain? if so could there be a tensioner wheel that might have gone out. How do I go about diagnosing this issue? Thank you Sedgewick

Hey, my name is Dusty and I'm one of the auto experts with RepairPal's Car Genius team here to help! The 2012 Buick Verano indeed has a timing chain, not a belt. The metal-on-metal noise you described is trouble and should be addressed promptly to prevent engine damage. It's likely being caused by the chain making contact somewhere it shouldn't (usually the composite on the guides disintegrates, exposing the metal guide) and is resulting in flakes of metal that can cause serious internal damage if left unchecked. I would consider seeking professional assistance for a thorough diagnosis and repair plan.
