Intermittent problems are very difficult to repair! It needs to be doing this at the time of testing or it may never be found! Possible connection at the dash cluster or vehicle speed sensor but needs testing with a scanner!
You can run self diagnostics on the cluster just in case the cluster is failing. First insert key into ignition. Hold down the trip/mileage rod that is sticking out of the cluster face and turn the ignition key to the run position. When chec appears in the mileage display, release the trip rod and watch the cluster. The mileage display will do circles, then all 8s, then the gauges will all cycle, then the indicator lights will turn on. When the mileage returns, the test is over.
Only effective if it is malfunctioning at the time plus cant retrieve codes! Scanner might have a shot at it!! Hopefully it can be done at the right time...
The self diag test only takes a couple minutes to run and just might pinpoint the problem.
I got ya, if it can be done by the driver at the time of malfunction! It aint no best fix here!!
