I think my clutch is going out but I would really like to replace the slave cylinder first, as it is leaking fluid pretty bad.
What is your question?
No auto parts store can get me a clutch slave cylinder for a 1997 geo tracker. Is the part compatible with one from a 1998 chevy tracker?? And where is it located?
RepairPal Certified shops can diagnose and repair your 1997 Geo Tracker. They provide transparent pricing with a minimum 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on repairs and services.
How do you know the slave cylinder is leaking if you can't find it? .. Are you constantly adding fluid to A 'clutch' master cylinder under the hood? .. Does it actually have a hydraulically operated clutch??
I did find it. And, yes, constantly adding brake fluid to master cylinder. According to my research, it is hydraulic and uses brake fluid. It is leaking like a sieve!
Thing is the 97 Geo Tracker is listed as having a clutch 'cable' .. I suppose you can remove the slave cylinder and take it to the parts store for comparison to the 98 Chevy Tracker slave cylinder... It must be a late 1997 year model production... Slave cylinder should have a casting number on it that can be cross referenced and used for comparison as well as visual in case they don't have one in stock and are just looking at pictures.
Ok, that makes sense. I have traced the brake system over and over but cant find the leak. Will look harder I guess. As far as the clutch goes, should I replace that cable also when I replace clutch? Will flywheel show obvious damage if it also needs replaced? Any tips on what to expect? I have never replaced a clutch before.
First the brakes take precedence over the clutch! .. Have a helper pump the brake pedal while you look for a leak... It may be leaking 'between ' the master cylinder and the brake booster.. As for the clutch, you will need a 'clutch kit' that includes: Pressure plate.. Clutch disc.. Release bearing.. Pilot bearing and the alignment tool .. Flywheel surface can be 'machined' and it is always a good idea to do so! .. You can always replace the cable later if needed... NOW, keep in mind you really didn't say what the clutch problem is exactly! .. Slipping .. Won't disengage/hard to shift gears .. Noisy .. Vibration when engaging?

I also just found a reference saying it has a cable. Does that mean it doesn't have a slave cylinder?? Where would all the fluid be coming from then?
It has to be coming from the 'brake' system! .. If it had a hydraulic clutch it would have TWO completely seperate master cylinders!

It's slipping. It's hard to get going when I put it in gear. Vibration.
Replace suggest clutch parts.. Have flywheel resurfaced.
I have the clutch kit already. Going to start on it tomorrow. Doesn't look fun! lol
