A diagnostic tool can be used to retrieve any trouble codes that are set, including for the "check engine" light but also for whatever is driving these other issues -- referencing "B" or body control module related codes that may have been set, or "U" undefined codes. Hands on testing is needed. I certainly would not go into guessing at a temperature control valve without verifying that it's failing by seeing that through test results.
