2004 VW Golf transmission won't shift into 5th gear and speedometer doesn't work

What is your question?

I saw an earlier post about the speedometer not working being tied to a ground wire to the transmission. Could this be the case here? How can I check that, or should I just take it to a garage?

Probably better off having local auto repair shop take a look - vehicle really needs to be hoisted.
