The inflator could explode during air bag deployment, resulting in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
Affected vehicles are equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the air bag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash. The inflator could rupture, spraying metal fragments onto vehicle occupants, which increases risk of serious injury or death.
Recall repairs on your BMW must be performed by a BMW dealership. BMW will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in July, 2021. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local BMW dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.
