Go to estimate on your Repaipal estimator and punch in your info, comes out to about $69 to $119 for a oil change and the price to just replace brake pads comes out to $205 to $278 without changing the Rotors, I usually change my pads every 30,000 as a rule so you don't ruin the rotors.

Unfortunately, cracked cylinder heads can be difficult to fix, and they are always expensive. the best thing would be to replace the cylinder head, but if the part isn't available, then that's a problem.

It may be possible to fix the crack and keep the car drivable. I recommend calling some other shops and even parts stores to see if anyone can offer to a less expensive solution than replacing the entire motor.

Sorry you're having such a mountain of trouble!

I purchased a 1995 318i BMW from a previous owner 2 years ago and I lost the key a couple of months ago. I took it to a BMW car dealer to make another key and was told that 100 BMW's my make and model were made without a key code. Now I have a car just sitting in the yard. I need to know how to get this resolved. Do anyone know who I can call directly other than a car dealer to get my car a key.

Call a local locksmith and explain the problem, Locksmiths encounter many different problems and one of them will know what to do.

hemicuda, January 05, 2009, 10:06

Usually you reach into the gap where seat meets the back, slide your hand in and grab the rear of the seat with both hands and pull up, Its very hard to do and you need to be quite strong.

BMW 325i's are very reliable cars when they are well-cared for. The information I'm looking at says that BMWs made in the early 90s require what BMW calls and "Inspection I" at least every 10,000 Miles, according to factory specifications. This service includes changing the oil and oil filter, and possibly the air filter.

What service you should perform now also depends on what was last performed by the prior owner. The best bet for keeping the car tip-top is to take it to a BMW expert and have them service your car based on what was most recently done and what it appears to need. The oil leak on the engine is definitely a concern.

I wouldn't recommend mineral water--distilled water is best, or at least clean water with low mineral content in an emergency, but maintaining the right coolant mix is very important. BMWs are sensitive, high-performance cars, and investing in maintenance will save big bucks in the long haul.

How is the inside door panel removed? The cable connecting the handle that opens the door broke. Thanks

This can be tricky, even for experienced technicians. The best bet is to buy a repair manual for your 528. You'll find detailed diagrams and instructions for how to find the fasteners and how to take off the panel. Another good resource are BMW enthusiast forums--you can find car-specific how to do it yourself information.

When the plastic "neck" of the radiator is broken, then you will need to replace the radiator. Be very cautious when it comes to the cooling system, overheating the engine will do thousands of dollars in damage very quickly!

cbar, 2004 BMW X3, Croton On Hudson, NY, December 26, 2008, 17:06

A few weeks back, I noticed condensation forming on the inside front windshield. I couldn't figure out why it was happening until I discovered the water leak in my trunk. I found the water after opening the trunk and a blanket on the left side was completely soaked.

Any ideas of where to begin with this problem. Given the expense of BMW service, maybe I could fix this one myself.

If you have a sunroof more than likely the drain hose is clogged, when its not raining open the sunroof and pour a glass or two of water around the rim area of the sunroof it should run out under the car if it dosn't the sunroof drain is clogged.

I would recommend taking your vehicle to a shop that can flush your radiator, but that depends on what is inside your radiator. What is the problem you are having?

What would be the process to check if one of parts that make the window work so i wont buy the motor or regulator first?

Russ, December 19, 2008, 09:59

Here is a quick test: With the key on, hold the window switch for the affected door in the down position and open and close the door firmly a few times. If the window starts working the fault is most likely with the window motor. If nothing happens, the next step would be to remove the door panel and perform some basic electrical diagnosis to isolate the fault.

Utterly fantastic car to own and drive. Only real complaint is the interior trim surrounding the door. Fail every two years and are very expensive to replace.

Barbara Gnos 1998 BMW M3 San Francisco, CA August 20, 2008 14:18

What a fun car to drive! Over 80K miles on our M3 and absolutely no problems. We have a fantastic local auto shop, Phaedrus, here in San Francisco to thank for the great experience. The car gets relatively good gas mileage too. It's too bad BMW isn't making 4-door M3s anymore.

This Car marked the breakthrough of BMW. Its a car that refuses to age and that even nowadays you see people wanting this model for its looks and incredible speed! I travel 8000 miles twice a year on two road trips and also use it for every day use and i have never had any problems with it apart from maintenance stuff like oil tyres etc and this is my 8th year in a row that i do these trips!

The e34 BMW is a classic that houses some of the modern characteristics found in late 90s cars. The bulletproof drivetrain of the large 6 cyl engine that has been perfected over the 20+ years of its existed is a pleasure to drive and repair with the abundant space under the bonnet.
There arent many things to watch out for, the recalls are minor and cost of ownership is low. To owners of automatic transmission e34s, a warning, the cost to rebuild or replace the trans is expensive and usually is the determining factor to get a different car. The steering gets loose after 130,000 miles but a simple adjsutment on the crude steering gear box corrects that, if not relatively cheap tie rods, idler arm bushings and sometimes ball joints correct the problem. The front suspension is prone to high mileage failure and the rubber bushing sin the front end should be replaced with the stronger 750 parts.
One of the best, longest lasting cars ever built.
Note: the e34 530 and 540 have issues with the aluminium casting used for the block and sometimes the engine will loose compression, not pass a leak down test, and the only option to fix the problem is to install a new engine made from the updated alloy (post 1997 engines).

All in all a great car - what you would expect from BMW. The biggest problem we have had is with the electrical - the battery keeps dying (even after replacement) and we do not know why. I've been told by AAA that all the electrical gizmos on the car drain the battery but it should hold a charge for more the 24 hours. The other knit is that the heating a cooling is a little complicated to figure out, but after you get the hang of it it works well. With AWD and superb handling a great all-season car for New England.

My dad has a BMW 325i, and I want to steal it. Fun to drive, it's been very reliable, and he hasn't spent much on maintenance and nothing on repair. The brakes are expensive, but they were under warranty. The oil changes are expensive, but you only have to do them once a year or less.

matte 2006 BMW X3 San Ramon, CA October 28, 2008 16:56

Parents have a BMW X3 that I drive. It's been fun, has a lot of room, and is easy to maintain. BMW pays regular maintenance under warranty, and we've never had repairs. Not great gas mileage though.

shauncope 1997 BMW 328i Oakland, CA October 30, 2008 19:00

Overall a great vehicle but like most others once it has even the slightest bit of damage, either body or engine, it is never the same even after extensive repairs. It also develops a very annoying issue with the heating and coolin system

Took my buddies car out on the open road and at 120mph it feels like 60mph, what smooth power this V12 has but the rear leveling struts went out and he had to order them from germany about $1500 each plus shipping OUCH!!

David Sturtz 2006 BMW 330i Berkeley, CA December 28, 2008 05:28

I was able to spend 4 months using this as a daily driver. Overall great car, easy to see why the 3-series is so popular with the press and populace. Engine is strong and flexible - nice power range (but not quite enough power for me - need the twin turbo), automatic transmission shifts smoothly and delivers power as it's needed (including manual shifting). The non-sports package seats were a disappointment - not nearly enough support. I find the run-flat tires to be a big downer - they cup as they wear, so they give the driver a grinding feeling when braking hard. Lights and electrical system performed well, as did the interior controls. I'll write another review of the 335i once I get it.

sarahe 2006 BMW 325i Laguna Beach, CA January 02, 2009 11:53

I owned a 325i for 2 years and loved every minute of it. Not once in two years did I experience even the smallest problem whatsoever with my car. Even more, I loved the fabulous service provided by BMW dealerships and service professional.

Oh BMW, how I'll miss you.....

BMW Problems

Brakes If the brakes are squealing, there's a good chance it is the brake pad wear sensor. A new design was implemented in January 2006 and can be identified by its green color.
Engine
  • Leaks are known to develop in the cooling system and it is common to see more than one part recommended for repair/replacement due to overlapping labor and the use of many plastic parts in the system.
  • Valve cover gasket, intake manifold, and PCV plate oil leaks are common after 60,000 miles.
Drive Train After 60,000 miles, the front outer half-shaft boots tend to tear and leak grease. In most cases, only the boot will have to be replaced; however, if it is not repaired soon enough, the half-shaft may need to be replaced. The front outer boots are put under heavy stress because of their involvement with the suspension when making turns. It is not common to see the other CV boots leak.
Suspension & Steering The front thrust rod bushingsalso referred to as tension strut bushingsare known to fail occasionally. The oil-filled rubber mounts weaken and crack over time, causing a mushy road feel and shuddering in the steering wheel when going over bumps.
Heating & Air Conditioning The blower final stage fan resistor is known to fail. Symptoms are the heater fan speed varies regardless of the setting, the fan will not turn off when the car is switched off, or the fan will not switch on at all.
