Power Steering Pump Replacement Repair

Sometimes refered to as Power Steering Pump, Replace Power Steering Pump, Power Steering Pump Replace

The power steering system uses a power steering pump driven by the engine to generate pressure that reduces the effort required to steer a vehicle. Pressure is generated by compressing the power steering fluid.

To replace the power steering pump, the fan belt that operates the pump and the hardware securing the pump to the engine are removed. The fluid is removed from the power steering reservoir, and the power steering fluid lines are removed from the power steering pump. The pump is then replaced. The system is refilled with fresh fluid, and the vehicle is driven and checked for leaks.

The fluid level in a power steering system should not require topping up. If it does, it's a sign of a leak that needs to be investigated. If the power steering system is allowed to operate with a low fluid level, damage may occur.

About this Repair: Power Steering Pump Replacement

Recommendations
  • We recommend flushing the power steering fluid when replacing the power steering pump.

  • We recommend checking for and replacing any worn or leaking power steering hoses when replacing the pump.

  • Be sure to consult your owner's manual before adding power steering fluid.  Many manufacturers require specific fluid, and use of an incorrect fluid can damage the system.

Why this happens
  • Unusual noise or difficulty when steering can signal a failing power steering pump.
